Playing with fire...

My husband's face was cast in shadow in this original picture, so I used the selection tool to highlight his head and face while darkening the background and portions of the blue tube in order keep the focus on my husband.

Dodge and Burn

Using the overlay method from our reading as opposed to the dodge and burn method, the lighting in this picture of railroad tracks on a slightly hazy afternoon turned into the light of a gleaming sunset causing the tracks to glow against a more silhouetted background without the haze.

  1. Wow! You have done some amazing shots and also using the dodge and burn tool you seem to have a good understanding on how to use the tool. I have to say the effect that you got from your husband being in the tube was simply awesome. Great work this week you can tell you put a lot of effort into this week.

  2. You have provided great examples on how to use these tools.

The railroad line and the landscape are awesome because you really have created interests and depth in the image. What doesn't work so well is the sky. This is mainly because it was originally very blown out and I don't know if you could bring the clouds in at this point using these tools.

What you did with your photograph of your husband is essentially what these tools were made for. They were made to help accentuate and bring focus to the things that the camera just could not capture originally.

    Excellent work!

    1. I agree. My overlay was solid black on the sky, but it was just too blown out to make a difference. I would have had to use some additional tools to really get the sky to match what I was creating for a scene on the ground.

  3. I love(LOVE!)your approach to the dodge and burn tools. This is what they were designed for, not a way of drastically changing a shot, but to pull out details, and control contrast subtley.
